How Print Cartridges and Toner Get Recycled
23 September 2026 — 2 min read
Xerox and HP both run free recycling schemes for used cartridges and toner — here's what actually happens to them, and how to get a collection set up.
Every cartridge and toner box you send back gets a second life. Xerox and HP both run free recycling schemes for their consumables, and getting your business set up takes one phone call.
Xerox: the Ecobox collection scheme
Xerox's Ecobox scheme collects used toner cartridges and supplies from your business at no cost. Xerox remanufactures 60% of all returned cartridges, and on average a remanufactured cartridge contains 85% reused or recycled parts by weight — built back to the same performance spec as a new one. Remanufacturing also uses up to 80% less energy than making a cartridge from scratch.
The wider Xerox Green World Alliance programme covers waste toner reuse, plastics and metals recovery, and energy conversion, keeping thousands of tonnes of print supplies out of landfill.
Ask us for a free Ecobox collection and we'll get it arranged.
HP Planet Partners
HP's Planet Partners programme recycles ink cartridges, printheads and maintenance cartridges free of charge — request a return box online and send larger quantities back in one go.
Fourth-generation HP Latex ink cartridges are made from cardboard, so they go straight in with your normal cardboard and paper recycling. Printheads are recycled separately through Planet Partners.
